Indoor Garden
Our next project was to create an indoor garden; an eco-friendly room that would support the growth of the plant of our choice. This was another partner project. Megan and I chose to grow green bell pepers. We took a day and researched all about our plant and how it grows. We researched what temperature it grows best at, what it needs to live, and how they grow. We drew two seperate designs and then combined our ideas into one. Next, we had to draw our design on a poster. We drew a wall fan for circulation (peppers grow by the pollination of buds), lights on the ceiling for the sunlight, a water tank to feed the plants, there was a space at the bottom of the plants to collect the extra water, and we used insulation to keep the warm air in. Lastly, we had to make a frame for our poster and used the staple gun to staple the frame to the poster board. We had to present our information to the class along with our poster. Next time if I were to do this project again, I would create a new design with different eco-friendly applinances.
Concept Cars
Our second term three project was the concept car. We could either chose an actual car or make one up. I chose the Nissan Cube 2013. We had to research the car you wanted to do. We needed to know the wheelbase, the total width, length, and height of the car. Next, we had to draw the car, cut it out, and glue it to the side of pink foam. Then, depnding on how many pink foam pieces you have, glue the pink foam together. But before you glued them together, you had to scrape it so the glue could seep into the cracks and keep the two or three pieces together. The solution was inside the pink foam. You could use the saw, scraper, or the grater to shape you car. After you shaped your car, you needed to cut out wheels and make windows. The wheels were made out of wood and the windows were made out of plexiglass. I had to make indents in the foam so my windows could fit. I had to use the heat gun to bend the a window because it wrapped around the car's side. Next, we had to paint the car and windows. I painted my car blue and windows black. Next, we had to make the lincence plate, mirrors, and make finishing touches by painting on lights and the outline of the doors, and the wheels. If I were to do this again, I would use the other side of the window for the outside because I put the painted side on the outside, but the smoother side was on the inside. I couldn't change it because I already put liquid nail on it. But overall I thought my car came out good. This was my favorite project in this class.
Phone
The next task was to make a phone from the future. First, we got to look at examples of phones from the previous years. Then, we had to draw the phone we wanted to create. You could make your phone out of plexiglass or wood. I chose plexiglass. After I measured the length and width I wanted my phone to be, I cut the plexiglass and sanded it. I made two identical pieces, one for the front of the phone and one for the back. I then printed out icons you have on your phone for texting, the app store, games, clocks, etc. and put them in between the two pieces of plexiglass. I used liquid nail to glue the two pieces together and then painted the back and the edges of the phone white. If I were to do this again, I would create a different design for a phone.
House
Our last project in term three was to build a house. This was a group project and my group was me, Megan, and Breanna. We had to come up with a design for our house, 1/4 of an inch equals a foot. We first had to build the foundation using pink foam and concrete. (The concrete filled the holes we made in the pink foam.) Next, we had to strip wood, measure, and cut them to fit our design. We then glued the wood on the foundation and put our floor design on the foundation. We then started to build our walls with srips from a white foam board. Our walls were 10 inches thick. Following our design, we cut and glued the walls down and cut out the windows and doors. During the middle of the project, we decided to create a second floor. We put wooden slats for the base of the second floor and glued the second floor design on the wood. We used the same steps for the second floor. Mr. Ramos made our rafters and then we put black shingles on. Breanna came up with the idea of making a log cabin. Mr. Ramos gave us an old broom stick and we cut it in half. We then measured the sides of the house and cut the it to the right lengh. The one thing i would have done differently was make the house bigger in size to get the extra credit points.
